GOP Hypocrisy Watch: Colbert Edition

I wonder how many of the Republicans and their fellow travelers out there who are dissing Stephen Colbert for being mean and unpatriotic and so forth were as quick to condemn Don Imus when he ripped into Clinton during a White House Press Correspondents' Dinner a few years ago? By the way: Go Google "clinton imus correspondents" and you'll find a slew of major-press articles discussing that part of that particular dinner, at length. So far for 2006, Dan Froomkin and USA Today are the only major-press people that have done much more than mention that Colbert was there Saturday, much less that he was the star attraction -- or that he ripped into Bush. As Froomkin and others have noted, the NYT's Elizabeth Bumiller did an entire piece on this year's dinner without so much as mentioning Colbert's name. (Thanks to Jane Hamsher at Fire Dog Lake for the Froomkin tip.)

It's understandable. Colbert said nothing about Bush's exercise routine, so there was nothing Bumiller would recognize as worth mentioning.
