"Tort Reform" = Destroy Safety
The excellent blog It Affects You weighs in on the "tort reform" scam.
"Tort Reform", of course, really means two things:
1) Let big corporations do whatever they want without having to face the music when they hurt us,
AND:
2) Hurt a key Democratic fund base, the trial lawyers.
"Tort Reform" = Destroy Safeguards.

I think the solution is to develop a legal reform movement of our own. The GOP is using class warfare (jealousy over high salaries) and feelings that the justice system is unfair to attack trial lawyers and "activist" judges.
A few decades ago, there was a progressive legal reform movement called HALT aimed at simplifying legal procedures (http://www.halt.org/) but they never got around to asserting that people have a right not just to any old attorney but a competent and interested one, that legal reform means that laws have to be made simpler, and so on. A basic tenet should be that both sides have roughly equal resources. It's ludicrous that corporations should be able to spend 10 or 100 or 1000 times their opposition.
