They Hide Everything, No Matter What
Kevin Drum and Corierre della Sera tell us about how NOT to "redact" classified information from a document. (In this case, the document is the official US report on the death of an Italian intelligence agent at the hands of US troops.) The fact that the Pentagon doesn't know how to redact PDF documents is bad enough. But as Kevin Drum notes, what they consider information that should be redacted is crazy. Given the choice between hiding something and not hiding it, their instinct is always to hide it. Once again, it makes me wonder just how much of that "top-secret information" that the Bushies punished Sandy Berger for using -- information that he himself generated during his tenure as Clinton's National Security adviser -- really needs to be kept "top-secret".
