Updated: Providing effective relief for the Guatemalan disaster

DemocracyNow carried a segment on the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Stan in Guatemala. Briefly, the indigenous areas were hit very hard, the government is failing to deliver aid, and the Indian population is refusing entry to soldiers because of long memories of the genocidal attacks. Delivering aid in indigenous areas is difficult. The Red Cross is likely to show up, give everyone a pair of socks, a bowl of soup, and a toothbrush, and take off. The Rigoberta Menchú Tum Foundation, established by that Nobel Prize winneris offering to deliver aid. This could be the most effective way to do it. They know the communities, who is honest and who is not, who works and who loafs. The following is what is require to do a wire transfer (cost probably $5). Thanks, Charles. This has been the ignored disaster, even though it's been going on for a while.
