Ponies for Everybody!

29% Twenty. Nine. Percent. That's Bush's approval rating, according to a new Harris Interactive Poll, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. I'm shocked. I didn't think he'd fall below 30 before the end of June. Postscript: The Reuters report includes the disapproval number:

The poll of 1,003 U.S. adults said 71 percent of Americans said Bush was doing an "only fair or poor job," up from 63 percent in April. It said the survey was conducted May 5-8 and had a 3 percent margin of error.
29 + 71 = 100. Nobody's undecided. I've never seen that happen before.
Comments:
All that saber-rattling against Iran seems to be backfiring, eh?

so. what. can't. wait. until. it. gets. to. two. point. nine. percent. it. doesn't. matter. ha. ha. ha. deal. with. it.

To paraphrase an ancient saying, "Whom the gods would destroy, they first drench in hubris."

Kinda like ranch dressing on hot wings, I guess.

whom the gods would destroy? didn't figure you for a pagan...

::chuckle::

If I quote Whoopi Goldberg, would that make me an African American female, z?

The quotation is a paraphrase of Euripides, who I think we may assume was a pagan. Euripides uses the word "madness" rather than narrower "hubris." But when people actually say things like, "I don't care if the United States is a dictatorship, as long as it's a dictator *I* like"-- a fair paraphrase of what Anonymous said above-- they have drifted into complete hubristic madness.

The closest that the JudeoChristian tradition has to the line from Euripides's is King Saul. I happen to be doing lectio divina on 1 Samuel, if you are interested.
