The Real Impact Of Zarqawi's Death

Bush and Rumsfeld have wised up. They're not saying anything that can be quoted back at them later, preferring instead to verbally play down the killing of Zarqawi while ordering that his corpse's picture be displayed all over TV, the newspapers and the internet, with the trained commentators of the GOP/Media Complex cheering the pics as evidence of a grand Corner-Turning, Army Group Steiner's finally arriving to save Berlin from the Soviet hordes and all that. But here's what the average person will be thinking: BushCo: Zarqawi is dead! Average Joe/Jane: Great! Can our wives and husbands come home now? BushCo: Er, um... Average Joe/Jane: Then you can continue to forget about our vote this November. It's as simple as that.

Comments:
As you say, until things in Iraq actually change, the death of one person isn't going to persuade people that things are on track. However, I haven't posted on this, because it's still so unclear what's going on. The AP has noted the inconsistencies of the stories, and are now reporting this:

The Iraqi, identified only as Mohammed, said residents put a bearded man in an ambulance before US forces arrived. He said the man was found lying next to an irrigation canal. "He was still alive. We put him in the ambulance, but when the Americans arrived they took him out of the ambulance, they beat him on his stomach and wrapped his head with his dishdasha, then they stomped on his stomach and his chest until he died and blood came out of his nose," Mohammed said, without saying how he knew the man was dead.

Why would US forces beat Zarqawi to death? Is Mohammed mistaken or lying? Or is something deeper going on? I don't have the slightest clue, but I do sense that the celebration on the right is very much premature.
