Your tax dollars at work under a Republican government

From the Guardian Cuban dissidents who were given millions of dollars by the US government to support democracy in their homeland instead blew money on computer games, cashmere sweaters, crabmeat and chocolates, which were then sent to the island. A scathing congressional audit of democracy assistance programmes found "questionable expenditure" by several groups funded by Washington in opposition to President Fidel Castro's rule on the communist Caribbean island. The Miami-based Acción Democrática Cubana spent money on a chainsaw, Nintendo Game Boys and Sony PlayStations, mountain bikes, leather coats and Godiva chocolates, which the group says were all sent to Cuba.... The US government, however, has previously accused the Cuban government of hijacking consignments sent to its mission.

Let me get this straight:

The whole point of the US' embargo against Cuba -- an embargo insisted on by "los cobardes", the Miami-based Batista backers who are still smarting over the loss of their plantations fifty years ago -- is to starve Cuba to the point where they will overthrow Castro. Yet los cobardes insist on undermining the embargo.

Oooohkkkay.

With Solzhenitsyn and the Soviet dissidents, we were smuggling in typewriters, paper, and Bibles. With the dissidents under Mao, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. But the Cubans get cashmere sweaters and chocolate. I can almost hear the meetings:

"I say, Biffy, should we have the Revolution on Tyusday? Oh, you've got an 11 o'clock at the racquetball club then? Well, I've got bridge on Wednesday, so how about Thursday?"
