Cambone Jumps Ship At The Pentagon

Stephen A. Cambone has resigned from his post as undersecretary of defense for intelligence, a position created for him by Donald Rumsfeld as part of Rumsfeld's efforts to stack the Pentagon with Rumsfeld/PNAC loyalists. Salon's Alex Koppleman has the goods. This is big because Stephen Cambone was Rumsfeld's right-hand man, his enforcer within the Pentagon of the Rumsfeld-Cheney-PNAC Doctrine, defender of OSP's Doug "stupidest effing man on the planet" Feith, and Rumsfeld's point man on Abu Ghraib and other atrocities. Cambone is widely hated by military brass and much of the staff in the Pentagon; one general said, only half-jokingly, that if he had one bullet left in his revolver, he'd "take out Steve Cambone". And now he's gone. The new questions are as follows: 1) Why, exactly, did he jump ship? 2) Will his departure make it easier to get our troops out of Iraq?
