Eric Black On Guatemala And Chile

Eric Black over at the StarTribune has a good blog post on the above subjects. As I mentioned over at Eric's shop, the simple fact is that the US' political leaders -- who all too often are acting at the behest of business leaders -- have tended to put subservience to the wills of the rich and powerful above all else. Democracy really isn't what they want, not if it keeps the R&P from having free rein to put up factories or military bases. That's not me being Bolshy; that's me stating a simple fact. They try to cover it up with excuses, but really that's what it's all about: Catering to the desires of the rich and powerful. Which is why it's so darkly amusing to see all the tighty-righties leap to Pinochet's defense with the same sort of he-made-the-trains-run-on-time nonsense said of Mussolini. And, just as with Mussolini, it was nonsense. Snopes has the debunking of the Mussolini trains myth here. The debunking of the Pinochet economic myths can be found in many places, but here's a good place to start.
