Experience Counts
Bush's replacement for Harriet Miers as White House Counsel is Fred Fielding.
Mr. Fielding was deputy White House counsel during Watergate.
And he held this same position during the Iran-Contra affair.
And he was a member of the 9/11 Commission.
This has been another episode of Things That Make You Say Hmm.
(Time, of course, completely glosses over those connections, describing the appointment as "a signal that he could be open to working more closely with congressional Democrats rather than stonewalling". We haven't invoked Upton Sinclair in a while: "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.")

Ah. In other words, he's James Baker 2.0, a fixer brought in whenever a Bush family member or other highly-placed scion of Republican royalty gets in trouble. And Bush will only listen to him when he spouts nonsense; otherwise the Boy-King will blow him off.
Fielding is clever enough that he got out of Watergate with his reputation intact. Even John Dean was admiring of him.
But anyone with a shred of decency would have refused to help Nixon in the slightest.
